Seasonal Flu shots

Seasonal flu shots are administered from October through March each year, but the official start date may vary from year to year.
Flu vaccines are covered by Alberta Health Services with a valid Alberta Health Care number.

Facts about the flu:

  • The flu is caused by a flu virus and spreads easily from one person to another

  • The virus spreads in “droplets” when you sneeze, cough, and talk.

  • Unwashed hands spread the virus to your mouth, eyes, or nose when you touch them.

  • The flu can be more dangerous for children, the elderly, and those with health conditions.

Note: For the most up to date and detailed information on the flu, see Health Canada.

Tips to lower your chances of getting the flu:

  • Protect yourself with the vaccine each year.

  • Follow the steps for proper hand washing with soap and water.

  • Cough or sneeze into a clean tissue, or cover your mouth and nose with your elbow.

  • Keep your distance from people you know are sick with the flu.

  • Clean shared surfaces with disinfecting wipes regularly.

RSV vaccinations

  • Health Canada recommends RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) vaccination for specific high-risk groups to help prevent severe illness.

  • Adults 60 years and older, as well as certain individuals with underlying medical conditions or weakened immune systems, may be eligible for the vaccine.

  • Clients are encouraged to call 811 to determine their eligibility.

Weight Management Essentials

Verifying vaccination passport

Whether you are navigating your health goals through lifestyle changes alone or with the assistance of prescription medications, your body needs consistency to adapt. Always follow the specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider, and keep these general best practices in mind:

  • Prioritize Nutrition & Hydration: Focus on a balanced diet rich in whole foods, lean proteins, and fiber to keep you fueled and satisfied. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if you are taking weight-loss medications.

  • Move Consistently: Incorporate regular physical activity that you genuinely enjoy. Whether it's daily walks, swimming, or strength training, aim for consistency and long-term sustainability over sudden, extreme workouts.

  • Medication Management: If you are prescribed weight management treatments (such as daily pills or weekly injections), take them exactly as directed. Sticking to your schedule is vital for maximizing the medication's effectiveness and minimizing side effects.

  • Patience is Key: Sustainable health changes are a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on how you feel, your energy levels, and overall health markers rather than just the number on the scale.

How Your Pharmacist Can Support Your Journey

Pharmacists are highly accessible healthcare professionals who do much more than just dispense pills. We play an active role in your weight management plan. Here is a general breakdown of what the Medicine Shoppe 328 pharmacy team can do for you:

  • Expert Medication Counselling: We explain exactly how your prescribed weight management medications work in your body, when it is best to take them, and what realistic results you can expect.

  • Injection Training: If you have been prescribed an injectable medication, we provide hands-on demonstrations and step-by-step guidance so you feel confident and comfortable administering it safely at home.

  • Side Effect Management: Certain weight-loss medications can cause temporary side effects like nausea, heartburn, or changes in digestion. We can recommend strategies, dietary adjustments, and over-the-counter remedies to help you manage them effectively.

  • Safety & Interaction Checks: We comprehensively review your entire medication profile (including supplements and vitamins) to ensure your weight management treatment doesn't interact negatively with anything else you are taking.

  • Ongoing Monitoring: We are here for regular check-ins. We can help you track your progress, monitor vital signs like blood pressure, and answer any questions as your body adjusts.
